In celebration of Phyllis A. Whitney's 98th birthday last year, I had a lap quilt made depicting some of the beautiful artwork used on her book jackets. I enlisted the help of my friends, Judy Hanson and Jane Morrow to create their own renditions of the chosen illustrations. Both Judy and Jane are expert quilters and are part of a Friendship Quilt Group that meets once a month in northern Massachusetts. Choosing which illustrations to use was a difficult decision, but the final list came down to Vermilion, The Ebony Swan, Flaming Tree, Thunder Heights, The Stone Bull, and Red is for Murder. From copies of the original jackets, Jane Morrow created unique patterns from which she and Judy Hanson could quilt the squares. Using a hand appliqué method, each square was then carefully hand-stitched, and then assembled together against a black background. Once finished, the quilt was photographed by Mark Wylie of mark wylie photography, and then sent on to Miss Whitney for her birthday. Today it is on display in her lovely home. I had the opportunity of interviewing Judy Hanson and Jane Morrow by mail. You can read more about what each of them had to say about the jacket cover quilt and their craft. To view a larger picture of a quilt square, just click on the square. Unfortunately, scanned photographs don't do this marvelous quilt justice, nor show all of the detail that went into the hand work. However, it truly is a beautiful quilt and I am grateful to Judy and Jane for their hard work in making this wonderful gift for me to give to Miss Whitney. Read an interview with Judy Hanson.
